"Cadetship is but a grim struggle of winning supremacy over oneself."
Few young Filipinos get the privilege of being called a cadet. The Philippine National Police Academy is a highly honored school for public safety that trains and molds the young to become future officers of the Philippine National Police, the Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology. It requires mental and physical prowess to become one of the cadets and the emotional stability and resilience to be transformed into the nation's finest future leaders.
A cadet experiences the so-called four "tions" in his entire cadetship. The four tions are Reception, Incorporation, Recognition, and the most awaited Graduation. These rites and ceremonies mark a cadet's phases throughout his cadetship program. These phases indicate the cadet's growth in the Academy and how the cadet had evolved from a civilian to an officer. It gives the cadet the necessary tools required for his duty as a respected officer in the field.
The first tion, the Reception, is the first step in becoming a cadet of the PNPA. It marks the start of the 45-day "breaking period," which orients and teaches an individual how to become a cadet. An individual, along with his classmates, is received by the Upperclass corps through the Reception Rites. It is a ceremony where one must endure the massive exercises that the Upperclass commands for a couple of minutes. This show how you are ready to take the challenge of becoming a member of the Grand Fraternity of Men and Women.
The second, the Incorporation, immerses the new cadet by living with the Upperclass corps. It marks the end of the "breaking period.” By now, the new cadet is expected to be strong physically and mentally. The new cadet will have his respected Company, which he will be part of, for his entire four years in the Academy.
The next is Recognition. It is the most awaited tion when you are a plebe. It symbolizes that the cadet is recognized as one of the members of the Upperclass corps. It ends the cadet's plebehood and the start of becoming a leader as it shows that the cadet is ready to handle an underclass.
The final tion is Graduation. This is the most important of all of the tions. This is the start of becoming an officer and a country leader. It marks the beginning of a new responsibility as the cadet will become a lieutenant or inspector in the respected bureau to which he will be assigned.
