The practice of journalism involves acquiring, analyzing, producing, and presenting news and information. Certain distinguishable traits and behaviors make journalism distinct from other pursuits and outcomes. These characteristics set journalism apart from further communication and make it essential in democracies. History reveals that the more democratic a society is, the more news and information it tends to have.

Radio broadcasting refers to using radio waves to send signals to large groups of listeners. Early use of radio focused on using the technology as an alternative to the telegraph, but by the 1920s, broadcast radio had taken off as a powerful telecommunications medium. Today, in addition to traditional AM and FM radio, satellite radio, digital radio broadcasts, and radio-style stations are available through the internet.

In addition to AM and FM radio, there's also satellite radio, which uses a separate set of frequencies to beam signals from satellites in space to paying subscribers. Many cars come with satellite radio receivers and limited-time subscriptions, helping to boost the service's popularity.

Technological advancements have given people more ways to access an increasing amount of data. Some broadcasters now broadcast digital radio signals and traditional analog signals. These can deliver higher sound quality and additional information displayed on a radio receiver. However, radio still plays a vital role in today’s world. Radio is more than just announcers, news, and songs. Radio is about companionship and the emotional connection with the listener.

Radio broadcasts provide real-time information, and some broadcast 24 hours a day can give the most recent updates to listeners. Radio can reach across borders and become a valuable source of information where reliable news is scarce. Radio has proved its worth in times of emergency, such as when access to the mobile network is down due to an overload or phone lines are cut. Even when there is no electricity, most radio sets can be battery-operated or hand-cranked.

Though it may be interesting or even entertaining, the maximum value of news is as a utility to empower the informed. The purpose of journalism is thus to provide citizens with the information they need to make the best possible decisions about their lives, communities, societies, and governments.
